Rachel Portman

Rachel Portman (born 11 December 1960) is an acclaimed British composer who made cinematic history as the first female composer to win an Academy Award for Best Original Score, which she received for her work on Emma (1996). Born in Surrey, England, she began composing at age 14 and later read music at Oxford University, where she discovered her passion for scoring student theater and films before transitioning into professional television projects for the BBC and Channel 4. Over her illustrious four-decade career, she has composed more than 100 melodious and emotionally rich scores for film, television, and theater, earning two subsequent Oscar nominations for The Cider House Rules (1999) and Chocolat (2000), alongside two Primetime Emmy Awards for Bessie and Julia.
