Metric is a Canadian indie rock band formed in 1998 in Toronto by Emily Haines (vocals, synths) and James Shaw (guitar). Known for their blend of synth-pop, new wave, and alternative rock, the quartet—completed by Joshua Winstead (bass) and Joules Scott-Key (drums)—achieved international success with hits like "Help I'm Alive" and albums such as Fantasies (2009).
