Curtis Mayfield

Curtis Lee Mayfield (1942–1999) was a visionary American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer who served as a primary architect of Chicago soul and politically conscious funk. He first rose to prominence as the leader of The Impressions, crafting civil rights anthems like "People Get Ready" that combined gospel harmonies with messages of social justice. Launching a solo career in 1970, he reached a creative peak with the landmark soundtrack for the film Super Fly (1972), which offered a gritty, cinematic critique of urban life and became a cornerstone of 1970s soul. Despite being paralyzed from the neck down following an on-stage accident in 1990, Mayfield heroically continued to record music until his death, leaving behind a legacy as a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame double inductee and a profound influence on generations of R&B and hip-hop artists.
