Can

Formed in Cologne, West Germany, in 1968, Can was a pioneering experimental rock group and a foundational force in the krautrock genre. Comprised of core members Irmin Schmidt, Holger Czukay, Michael Karoli, and Jaki Liebezeit, along with vocalists Malcolm Mooney and later Damo Suzuki, the band transcended traditional rock structures by blending avant-garde, funk, jazz, and world music elements. Their unique approach, often described as "instant composition," relied on intense studio improvisation and meticulous tape editing to create hypnotic, groove-driven soundscapes. Through seminal albums like Monster Movie (1969), Tago Mago (1971), Ege Bamyasi (1972), and Future Days (1973), Can exerted a profound, lasting influence on ambient, post-punk, electronic, and indie rock music.
