Raised in a creative family, she was inspired to pursue acting at age eight after seeing her cousin perform in a commercial. Steinfeld achieved a historic breakthrough at just 14 when her film debut as Mattie Ross in the Coen brothers' western True Grit (2010) earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
